With 2016 coming to a close I think it is a good time to go over some the new technologies that may have been pushed away from the main stream news. These have been mentioned in previous blogs this year so I won’t be going into too much detail.
- Google Translate – The closest we have come to the babble fish from Hitch hikers guide. This application for your phone features over 100 languages, however some of them must be downloaded. This is a great start to bridging that language barrier that deters a lot of people from traveling. It features the ability to almost instantaneously translate written word. While its speech recognition is still dependent on your phone, it will allow you to carry on a short conversation should you need to ask for directions or information.
- Intel Core M Processor – While not really a “new” technology, but the process of making the processors has improved. The Intel Core M series will be the first of a new line of thinner processors. These will be 37% smaller than current processors, 14nm compared to the current 22nm. So what does this mean for the future? Well thinner processors will mean that they can make thinner laptops and phones. Thinner also means that it will dissipate heat much efficiently.
- SSD Drives – While in no way “new” much like the previously mentioned processors, SSD drives have made a huge leap in affordability this year. Moving from a whopping $2 – $3 per gigabit, to a much more affordable $0.50 – $1 per gigabit. These drives feature much improved performance over their predecessors, improving read and write speeds so much that if configured correctly can bring your system’s boot time down to a blazing 4 – 5 seconds. Upgrading to an SSD is not hard at all and very affordable.
- WiGig – The only previously unmentioned item on this recap. WiGig is a new wireless standard for laptops and other wireless enabled devices. Boasting max speeds of 7 Gigabits/sec and operating on the 60Ghz frequency, this is a massive improvement over the current 802.11AC 5Ghz maximum of 1.3 Gigabits/sec. While not fully implemented into everyday life, it has already been implemented into some of Dell’s new Latitude systems.
